Notes on James & Edwin Butterworth

James Butterworth 28/08/1771 - 23/11/1837

Manchester topographer, youngest of 11 children, b. 28th Aug 1771 Ashton under Lyne. Parents probably handloom weavers. Schooled under John Taylor of Alt[rincham?]. Taylor allowed him a share in the instruction of the lower classes. Some skill in ornamental penmanship. Married in 1792 Hannah Boyton: 10 children; youngest Edwin. After many years in 'tuition', Postmaster of Oldham. Lengthy series of books & pamphlets on the History of Lancashire which record much that would have been lost but for his personal observation.
D. 23rd Nov 1837.
His writings included 'A Dish of Hodge Podge', a collection of poems by Paul Bobbin sq. of Alt Nr Oldham [?], printed for the author 1800.

Also 'History & Description of Saddleworth Parochial Chapelry' etc. etc.
Some of his works are with Edwin's in Oldham Lyceum.

Edwin Butterworth 01/10/1812 - 19/04/1848

Lancs topographer, 10th & youngest child of James Butterworth 1771-1837. B. Pitses Nr Oldham 1st Oct 1812. His statistical research helped Ed Baines in the History of Lancashire & a project of voluminous notes for a history of Lancs in 50 volumes was encouraged by the Earl of Ellesmere, but died before it could be completed. Among his works: 'Views of the Manchester & Leeds Railway', drawn from nature and on stone [?] by A.F. Zait [Zeit?], with a descriptive history by Edwin Butterworth in 1845 folio. Also correspondent for Manchester papers, and for a considerable time the registrar of births & deaths for the township of Chadderton [?]. 'Genial and modest'. Book & manuscripts not dispersed; were bought by Messrs Platt Bros and presented to the Oldham Lyceum. Died typhoid 19th April 1848. 1859 monument to his memory erected by public subscription in Greenacres Cemetary, Oldham.
